What are some issues that Darry had to give up?

What are some things that Darry had to give up in the book The Outsiders? I have to do this project for school, the instructions are: Choose an event or time in your life when you faced the issues that your character faces. It might be a direct similarity or an indirect one, but you must be able to tie the things that your character is going throught to your own life. I chose Darry Curtis.
